Ceremony Is this the Rumi show?
No. That is rather the point. The Sema here is the ritual of the Mevlevi Order, the path that grew from the followers of Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi, and the semazens who whirl it are sworn to this lodge. Istanbul has staged whirling shows too; ours is a service, held on the nights the lodge prays. You come as a guest.
Ceremony Do I need to speak Turkish?
No. The Sema itself is a wordless ceremony of music and movement. Optional narrated sessions are offered in English on selected dates. See the schedule for narration language.
Visit How long is the ceremony?
About sixty minutes. Doors open thirty minutes prior. Late entry is not permitted once the ney begins, so plan to arrive early.
Visit What should I wear?
Smart casual. Cover shoulders and knees; this is a working place of worship and the room expects that of guests. Comfortable shoes help, since seating is close to the floor. No head covering is needed.
Visit Are children welcome?
From about the age of seven, provided they can stay quiet for the full hour. We do not recommend bringing infants or toddlers; the silence is part of the ritual.
Visit Where is the lodge?
Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi sits in the Kasımpaşa neighbourhood of Beyoğlu, a short taxi or metro ride from Taksim and Galata. The street is quiet and narrow, so allow ten extra minutes. Full directions are on the visit page.
Visit Is the lodge accessible?
The semahane is on the ground floor, but a few historic stone steps lead up to it. Write to the lodge before booking if you have mobility needs and we will do what we can.
Etiquette May I take photographs or video?
Silent photography is permitted during the opening and the closing. During the whirling itself all recording is prohibited, out of respect for what is happening in the room.
Booking What is the refund policy?
Full refund up to 48 hours before. After that, no refund. We can usually move you to another evening if seats remain, so write to the lodge with your reservation reference.
