Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi, the 17th-century lodge as it stands today

Planning Your Visit

Everything you need to know before you arrive.

The address

Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi, Sururi Mehmet Efendi Mah., Keramet Sokak No:17, 34435 Beyoğlu, Istanbul. The lodge stands on a narrow street above the Golden Horn. It is easy to walk straight past, so allow ten extra minutes on a first visit.

By metro

Take the M2 line to Şişhane. From there it is about a fifteen minute walk downhill. This is the simplest route from Taksim, from Levent, and from the airport line.

By ferry

The Üsküdar–Eyüp and Kadıköy–Eyüp ferries both stop at Kasımpaşa İskelesi. The lodge is a ten minute walk up from the pier. On a clear evening this is the nicest way to arrive.

By bus

Buses run from Eminönü and from Beşiktaş. Get off at Ahmet Emin Yalman İlkokulu, three minutes from our door. The routes that stop there are 28, 28T, 66, 70FE, 70KE, EM1 and 77Ç.

On foot

From Galata Tower it is about sixteen minutes. From Taksim Square, about twenty. Both walks run downhill toward the water.

By taxi

Every driver knows Kasımpaşa. Ask for Keramet Sokak, or simply show the address. Traffic in Beyoğlu is heavy at five, so leave earlier than the map tells you.

When to arrive

Doors open thirty minutes before the ceremony. Come inside that window if you want a good seat. Once the ney begins we cannot let anyone in.

What to wear

Smart casual, with shoulders and knees covered. This is a working place of worship. Guests need no head covering. Wear shoes you can slip off easily.

Photography

You may take quiet photographs during the opening and the closing. During the whirling itself, please put the camera away. No flash at any point.

Children

Children are welcome from about the age of seven. The room stays silent for a full hour, which is hard on younger ones. Please do not bring infants.

Access

The semahane is on the ground floor, but a few historic stone steps lead up to it. Write to us before you book if you have mobility needs and we will help.

Paying

You reserve free and pay when you arrive, by cash or by card. You may cancel up to forty-eight hours before, at no charge.

Afterwards

Two small museums sit inside the lodge and the arts gallery is upstairs. Both are open before and after the ceremony. The waterfront is a short walk downhill.
